John William ROBISON, Sr. was born on the 4th of January, 1897 in Posey County, Indiana. He was the son of William H. ROBISON and Elizabeth McKELLIGOTT. John had one older brother, Aubry A. ROBISON.

The ROBISON family was living at 441 W. 8th Street in Mt. Vernon at the time of 1900 census. John was three-years-old, older brother Aubry was nine. Their parents were listed as William, 40, a veterinary surgeon, and Elizabeth (41). Living on the same block were other ROBISON families: the family of John’s uncle, Jesse ROBISON, and the families of his cousins Harry ROBISON and George ROBISON.

Ten years later, in the 1910 census, we find the ROBISON family: father William, 52, a veterinary doctor; mother Elizabeth, 57; Aubry, 19, a mechanic in a foundry; and John, 13). They were residing at 445 W. 8th Street, just a few doors away from the house they were in ten years earlier.

On June 5, 1918, John completed his World War I draft registration document. He reported that he was living at his parents’ home at 448 W. 8th Street in Mt. Vernon and that he was self-employed. The address he listed was 232 Main Street in Mt. Vernon. Although he does not list an occupation, the address is that of the Smokewell Tobacco Company which John and Aubry co-owned. John describes himself as having grey eyes and light brown hair.

Less than a year after he completed his draft registration, John married Lola May TISCHENDORF, a Mt. Vernon girl. The couple was wed on 12 February, 1919 in Posey County, IN. Within 3 ½ years, they had two sons: John W. ROBISON, Jr., who was born on 19 December, 1919 and lived to adulthood, and Howard Ray ROBISON, who was born on the 7th of June 1922 and died 5 ½ months later on 21 November, 1922.

In the 1920 census, the family (John W., 22, proprietor of a cigar store; his wife Mary L., 22; and their new-born son, John W. Jr. 0/12) was renting a home at 228 Main Street in Mt. Vernon.

John was an entrepreneur. As mentioned above, he was co-owner of the Smokewell Tobacco Company with his older brother, Aubry . . . . On 3 May 1922, John and another Mt. Vernon man, Mark C. Albright, filed a patent for a novelty parasol. The document was labeled as “Des. 64,653”. The patent was made official on 29 May 1924 for a period of seven years. His niece said that John’s ongoing occupation was as a bookie.

At the time of the WWII draft registration, 45- year-old John was living at 619 E. Water Street in Mt. Vernon. His wife, Lola, was listed as his next of kin and his employer as Frank Melville at 8 North W. Evansville, IN.
