George Frederick Bender served as a Seaman Second Class in the United States Navy on the USS Houston (CA 30) during World War II. After the USS Houston was attacked and sunk during the Battle of Sunda Strait in 1942, Japanese forces captured Bender and 367 other survivors. He died in a prisoner-of-war camp in Thailand on May 22, 1944.
