At the time of the June 1900 census the family was living in Shelburn (today a ghost town) in Linn County, Oregon. August's father was a farmer; Herman, August and Frank were day laborers. Lizzie was a housekeeper and Otto was attending school.
During the 1910 census August lived with his father, his 2 brothers and Otto's first wife Rose in Kingston, Linn County, Oregon where everyone worked on the home farm. August's father died of Bright's disease (a kidney disease) in 1913.
In the census of 1920, August and his brother Herman were listed in Shelburn again. August was farming and Herman was not working. Herman was unable to read or write.
Prior to entering the state hospital August lived at the Fisler Nursing Home in Albany, Linn County, Oregon.
On 12/31/1951 August was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. He was diagnosed with "senility." He died there about a month later of "general arteriosclerosis."
His brother Frank died in 1947 and is buried in Salem, Oregon. His brother Otto died in Lane County, Oregon in 1964 (FAG memorial # 116041176). His sister Emma (Rahn) Miller died in 1966 (FAG # 26641587) and Lizzie died in 1975 (FAG # 83307775). Herman died between 1920 and 1964.
