Daniel was a resident of Mills County, Iowa, when he joined the Union Army. He enlisted in "Sears' Rangers" as a Farrier on 3 Sept 1861 at the age of 28 years. Mustered in Co A 4th Iowa Cavalry on 23 Nov 1861. Discharged on 5 Sept 1862 to accept a commission as 1st Lieutenant of Co A 3rd Arkansas, later known as the 56th U.S. Colored Infantry. He was promoted to Captain in that regiment on 6 Dec 1864. He held the position of Captain until the end of the war when he was discharged Sept 1866.
Daniel returned to his family, who were then living in Nemaha Falls, Nebraska. From there they moved to Pleasant Valley, Kansas (Jefferson County) where they located on a farm.
From 1874-1878 Daniel served as a county clerk in Jefferson County, Kansas. In 1884 the family moved to Meriden, Kansas. He was a member of the M.E. Church and the I.O.O.F. at Meriden. Daniel's wife died in 1888.
In 1899 Daniel moved to Topeka, Kansas, to live with his daughter, Mrs. William (Ida) Herron, where he stayed until his death. He died at the age of 92 years.
