Daniel was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio with his parents in 1838. At age 20 he left Ohio and went to Indiana and there learned plow making. The following year he returned home to Ohio and for a few months attended Wittenberg College. In December 1854, he and his brother John walked across the county, paying their way by work as they went. They returned to Germantown, Indiana, and Daniel again engaged in plow making and blacksmithing. In March 1855 he relocated to Sidney, Fremont County, Iowa, where he followed his trade. He became acquainted with LH Stringfield, a blacksmith, and worked for him on his farm near Loudin, Mills County, Iowa. Daniel married Martha "Mattie" Stringfield.

Daniel was a resident of Mills County, Iowa, when he joined the Union Army. He enlisted in "Sears' Rangers" as a Farrier on 3 Sept 1861 at the age of 28 years. Mustered in Co A 4th Iowa Cavalry on 23 Nov 1861. Discharged on 5 Sept 1862 to accept a commission as 1st Lieutenant of Co A 3rd Arkansas, later known as the 56th U.S. Colored Infantry. Daniel returned to his family, who were then living in Nemaha Falls, Nebraska. From there they moved to Pleasant Valley, Kansas (Jefferson County) where they located on a farm.
