Killed in the crash of a U.S. Air Force RB-36H reconnaissance bomber near Burgoynes Cove, Newfoundland, Canada. The huge airplane was on a low level flight from the Azores, eastern Atlantic, back to it's home base in Rapid City, South Dakota when it collided with a ridgetop. Twenty-two other crewmembers also perished, including Brigadier General Richard Ellsworth. An SB-29 Superfortress, with a crew of eleven, was sent to search for the missing bomber. On it's return to it's base the SB-29 crashed into St. George's Bay and the bodies of it's crew were never found.
