Mrs. Merritt Bentley
Shaftsbury - Mrs. Carrie Bowen Bentley, 80, widow of Merritt Bentley, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Guy Mattison, with whom she had made her home since the death of her husband in 1959.
Born in Arlington Oct 20, 1880, she was the daughter of Edgar and Lydia (Cole) Bowen. Her schooling had been received in Arlington and Shaftsbury. She had been a teacher for a time in Glastenbury.
She was united in marriage to Mr. Bentley Feb 6, 1901 at the Shaftsbury parsonage with the Rev. Mr. Lemmon officiating. They had observed their golden jubilee in 1951. Mr. Bentley died Jan 20, 1959. They had made their home in Arlington for more than half a century, where Mr. Bentley had been engaged in farming.
Mrs. Bentley had been active in many groups. She was a charter member of Taconic Grange, Ethan Allen Pomona Grange, a member of the former Baptist Church in Center Shaftsbury and more recently of the South Shaftsbury Methodist Church.
Survivors besides her daughter include one son, Winfield of Manchester; one sister, Mrs. Etta B. Cole of Arlington; one sister-in-law, Mrs. William Twitchell of Arlington; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2:30 pm from Walbridge Funeral Home, Bennington, with the Rev. A.J. MacDonald, pastor of th South Shaftsbury Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home at their convenience. The family will be in attendance from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm today.
