Cold War Soviet Espionage Figure. Recruited in the 1930s into the American Communist Party despite his misgivings, he would become the American courier of Soviet spy and British national Klaus Fuchs, helping Fuchs pass on information about the atomic bomb developed in the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union. Arrested in 1950, Gold's incriminating testimony, the truthfulness of which is still subject to much debate, led to the arrest, indictment, trial and execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Gold himself was sentenced to thirty years in prison, but served only half until he was paroled.
