Fr. Kurt Holderied, was born in Chicago Heights, IL, on April 21, 1933, the son of the late Max and Helen (Horan) Holderied. His family consisted of a brother Robert, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Joan.
He attended St. Ann School and then Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. After graduation, he enrolled at Mt. Carmel Prep Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ont, to begin studies for the priesthood in the Carmelite Order. He professed vows to the Order in 1953 and was ordained a priest in Chicago, on May 23, 1959.
Following ordination, Fr. Holderied, was assigned to teach at Catholic High in Joliet, IL. His other teaching assignments included Mt. Carmel College in Niagara Falls, Ont, and Mt. Carmel High School in Houston, TX. He also served as principal at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, AZ. In the academia level, Fr. Kurt served in administration at Lewis University in Romeoville, IL, the University of San Diego in CA, and at Marion College in Fond du Lac, WI.
Fr. Kurt received his bachelors degree from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY; a master's degree from the University of Notre Dame; and his doctorate in Education from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI.
Fr. Holderied served in the Carmelite parishes of St. John's in New Baltimore, PA, and in NJ, at St. John's in Leonia, Immaculate Conception in Norwood; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Tenafly, and Our Lady of Peace in Niagara Falls, Ont.His other assignments included directing the Kino Institute in Phoenix, AZ; being a staff member at Carmel Retreat in Mahwah, NJ; Mt. Carmel Spiritual Center in Niagara Falls, Ont, and Carmelite Chapel in Peabody, MA.
