Death Of Captain Alexander Winder

Well Known Seafaring Man Dies After Undergoing Surgical Operation


Capt. Alexander Winder, a well-known seafaring man of the city, died yesterday at St. Vincent's Hospital, Norfolk, where he had been under treatment for the last two weeks. He was in the seventy-first year of age, and was a native of Mathews county. He resided in Norfolk for thirty years, but for the last three years had made his home in this city with his son-in-law, Mr. W. T. L. Shepherd.


Captain Winder has followed the water for the last fifty years and has been captain and part owner of twenty-eight vessels. He was at the time of his death superintendent of the Ocean Fisheries Company's plant at Southport, N.C. He was widely known and had hosts of friends.


He leaves a wife, Mrs. Mary L. Winder, and seven children, W. J. Winder, Captain John L. Winder, of the Merritt and Chapman Wrecking Co., and Mrs. Geo. Eva Windar(sic) and Mrs. H. C. Clark, of Greensboro, N.C.; Mrs. W. T. L. Shepherd, of this city.


Funeral services tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of his son, Mr. W. G. Winder, 522 Herman avenue, Norfolk, conducted by Rev. W. R. Leckliter, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, of this city. The remains will be taken to Mathews county on Monday for interment.

Captain Alexander Winder


Captain Alexander Winder, a well-known steamboat man of Norfolk, where he had made his home for twelve years, died last week at St. Vincent's hospital. Captain Winder, who was in the seventy-first year of his age, with a native of Mathews county, but for several years just prior to moving to Norfolk, a resident of Irvington. He is survived by his widow, four daughters and three sons. The children: Mrs. H. C. Clark and Miss Eva Winder of Greensboro, N.C.; Mrs. George Banks of Norfolk; Mrs. William Shepard of Portsmouth; Edward B. Winder of Baltimore; W. J. and John L. Winder of Norfolk. Funeral services were conducted at the residence of W. J. Winder, No, 522 Herman avenue, Atlantic City, Sunday. The body was taken to Mathews county for interment Monday.
