Frederic GIERS was born in Prussia or Alsace-Lorraine in 1834. The family immigrated (1834 or 1843) to America with their 3 sons. They originally settled in St. Louis , Missouri. In August, 1849, Fred settled at Naples, Illinois, where he was engaged in merchandize with his brother, Charles H., continuing till the spring of 1856, when he moved to Otterville. The next year he commenced merchandizing for himself, which he continued till the spring of 1863, when he married Rowena Curtis and became a member of the firm of H. E. Dougherty & Co., proprietors of the Otterville mills, in which, with a branch mercantile house, he continued till the summer of 1869, when he became sole proprietor of the mercantile business, having the year previously disposed of his interest in the mill. Mr. Giers had a general assortment of dry goods, boots and shoes, notions, etc. In April 1879 the entire Giers family relocated to Colorado. He took up a homestead in Arapahoe county in 1881, but later settled at La Salle, Weld county where he was joined by his wife and children the following August. Frederick died there in 1888. (Some of this information comes from the 1872 Jersey County Atlas, and also from the History of Colorado Biographical Vol 4, 1927, pgs 404, 405).
