Leo Manthei, longtime Blackduck conservation officer, died peacefully at his home in Wickenburg, Ariz. on Jan 13, 2004. He was born in Oakland, Calif. on June 13, 1919 and grew up in Columbia Heights, Minn. where he was active in football, hunting and fishing. He married Ann Wohlford on Nov 26, 1942. During World War II he served in the United States Air Force and continued to have a strong sense of patriotism and love of aircraft throughout his life. Upon becoming a Minnesota Game Warden, he moved his family to Blackduck where he was active in golf, hunting, Civic and Commerce, the American Legion, and St Ann's Catholic Church, and photography. Many young men learned snowmobile and firearm safety from him, and he was frequently seen at the high school football games and practices. He loved Blackduck and the surrounding area and always considered it his home, although he spent the last 18 winters in Wickenburg, Ariz. where he hunted quail and doves, and gave desert treks to share his love of nature.
Leo and Ann have five daughters, Ann Guerin of Huron, SD, Eileen ("Chi") Manthei of Elk River, Minn, Mary Gensen of Menomie, Wis, Therese Fuller of Hayward, Wis, and Laurel Gilbert of Hibbing, Minn; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Catherine Tripp and Lois O'Fallon; brother Charles Manthei.
Leo beliecved he had lived an ideal life. He was grateful to have had a job he loved, a 62-year marriage to a woman he loved deeply, and five daughters to spoil him, and to whom he left a legacy of love of nature, music and history.
He had a steady stream of friends visiting him in his last days, and they recounted the many stories he used to tell over morning coffee. He will be missed.
Services were held Monday, Jan 19, 2004 at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Wickenburg.
