David "Dave" Henry Day III, 78, of Battle Creek, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2006, at Battle Creek Health Systems. Dave was born on May 28, 1928, in Dayton, Ohio, and was the son of David Henry and Helen (Gunckel) Day Jr.
He was a 1955 graduate of Central Michigan University and completed his master's work on counseling at the University of Michigan and Western Michigan University.
Dave retired in 1984 from Harper Creek High School as a guidance counselor and business teacher after 28 years of faithful service.
He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served as a forward air observer for the 1st Calvary Division, and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars.
He loved fishing "Up North" and on Lake Michigan, along with deer hunting, and in his later years, goose and duck hunting. Dave followed football and basketball religiously and was a "U of M Fanatic." Friends were special to Dave, and he always took great satisfaction in listening to jazz.
He was especially proud of his heritage because his grandfather had developed the Sleeping Bear Area. Dave Taghone, director of the Empire Area Heritage Group, is quoted as saying, "Dave had the keen desire for carrying the legacy of the D. H. Day name, including the name of his father, David Jr. He was in the process of lining-up the presentation of the Day memorabilia, which is so important to Northern Michigan."
"The staff of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore are saddened to learn of the passing of David Day III. It was a pleasure for me to have met Dave and to be inspired by his passion to preserve the history of Glen Haven. The National Park Service continues to preserve and restore the Glen Haven Historic District in order to share with our visitors what it can tell us about the maritime and settlement history of Michigan. The Day family is central to that history, particularly Dave Day's grandfather and namesake, D.H. Day, and Dave contributed to our ability to relate his family's important story by providing us with information and artifacts from Glen Haven. All of us at the National Lakeshore, including Superintendent Dusty Schultz, appreciated Dave's willingness to share his knowledge of the families, business enterprises and daily life of the village, and as we continue to restore and operate the historic village of Glen Haven, many thousands of our visitors will as well." This quote was provided by Mr. Tom Ulrich, Acting Superintendent.
On June 11, 1955, in Saginaw, he married the former Susan C. Schaefer, and she survives. Also surviving are a son, two grandchildren and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, with full military honors provided by the Fort Custer Honor Guard.
