James S. Henley was born in Monroe County to Isaac and Mary Ann Click Henley. Isaac was the son of Thomas Henley, with an ancestry inhabiting Northern Virginia, Washington County, Tennessee, and dating back to Colonial America. The family moved to Meigs County in 1870 to a log cabin near the Tennessee River on a farm now known as the Bass Dake property.
James attended Hiwassee College in the later 1890's and subsequently taught school at Bogle's Chapel in Rhea County. He later entered government, serving Meigs County as Trustee for two terms and the Chairman of the Meigs County Court for a number of years. He was a prominent farmer and businessman, who owned and operated King's Mill (Henley's Mill) on Sewee Creek for a number of years.
James Henley was married to Alice Williams, the daughter of John Williams and Polly Ann Fike, of Meigs County. The ceremony was performed at Pin Hook, Tennessee by Preacher Carnes of the Methodist Church.
They bore eight children:
1) Edna Henley, a teacher, who died during the flu epidemic of 1918
2) Mary Henley, the wife of Nelia Moon, and the mother of Kenneth Moon of Spring City. Mary died in 1937 at the age of thirty-six.
3) Eva Henley, the wife of Sam Henley, and the mother of Earl Henley of Athens, and Irene Henley Jewell of Decatur. She died at the age of seventy-three.
4) Reece Henley was twelve when she died, also as a result of the 19180 flu epidemic. Her death preceded her sister, Edna, by one day.
5) John K. Henley, their only son, who married Eula Peace, of Decatur, Tennessee. They had two children, Nancy Kay Hinch of Virginia, and Jerry Henley of Spring City. John K. was fifty nine when he died
6) Dorothy Henley, who married Lum Runyan, of Decatur. They had two children: Richard (Dick) Runyan, of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, and Patrick Runyan of Indian Harbor Beach, Florida. Dorothy is a graduate of Hiwassee College and Tennessee Wesleyan College. She taught school in Meigs County and Athens, McMinn county for thirty five years.
7) Leta & 8) Lena Henley - were twins. Lena died in infancy. Leta married James Burton Leuty, of Rhea County. They reared three children: James Henley Leuty of Nashville:; Thomas Burton Leuty of Rhea County and Mary Nell Fox of Nashville.
