William was the son of John Milton Bryan and Charlotte G. Wright.
He is listed at home with his family in the 1860 census of Goshen, Stark County, Illinois.

Private in Company B, 37th Illinois Infantry. Died from a shot in the head at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas. He was mess mate of Norman Henry Ives who kept the photo above of William all his life with the note "The finest and best Christian boy I ever knew".

His marker may be a memorial rather than his actual burial site. A couple of sources state that William was buried at Prairie Grove, rather than at Lafayette Cemetery. Fraker's Grove, a book written about Lafayette, states that William is buried at Prairie Grove. The Lafayette 150 year 1986 Sesquintennial also states he is buried at Prairie Grove, while the Lafayette Cemetery Listings show him in Lot A-314.
Wikipedia states the soldiers remains were removed from the battlefield cemeteries of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove to Fayetteville National Cemetery, most of them unidentified.
