A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Cephus Erwin and Mary Walls Medford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Milton Crain, who died in 1968 and his second wife, Pansy Young Medford, who died in 2005. Lewin was a U.S. Marine veteran of World War II and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he served as choir director for four years as well as many other churches in Haywood County.
He is survived by one son, Erwin Medford of Grantville, Georgia; one daughter, Loretta Rector of Johnstown, Ohio; one step-daughter, Freida Towe of Waynesville; two step-sons, Thomas Trantham of Mars Hill and Bruce Trantham of Hendersonville; four grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a number of step-great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Bruce Cayton officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.
