Mary (Ellis) Barilich, 90, passed away Monday in her home in Mishawaka.

Born in Nagykanizsa, Hungary, July 23, 1901, Mary lived with her parents and older sister.
In 1910, the family wanted a better life and decided to migrate to America. The plan was that the Father would go to America first to get settled, the rest would follow at a later date. A little more then a year passes, in early March, 1912, word came from Father that it was okay to come to America. It took mother about three week to get things ready to go. Passage had to be made to travel to England, on March 31, Mother and the two girls started for England. The trip would take 8 to 10 days to get to Southampton, England, where they would book passage to New York. Travel was slow, on April 10th, they made it to Southampton, only to find the ship had sailed two hours before. Name of the ship? "TITANIC".

Now in America, what a great place. A new land, but old world ways. To help the family survive, Mary was told by her parents that she had been sold into bondage for twelve years, an old world custom. Her new owner was Gesa Czegledy, of South Bend, Indiana. Bondage being unlawful in the U.S, Mary was married at the young age of 13. At the young age of 14, she miscarried her first child. In the next 12 years, Mary gave birth to 9 children, 7 survived, two miscarried; 5 sons, John, Alex, George, Gay, and Louis; two daughters, Mary and Emma.

At the end of 12 years, Mary served out her bondage obligation. In 1936, Mary and Geza divorced, and all their children changed their last name from Czegledy to Ellis, Mary's maiden name.

On Oct. 28, 1950, Mary married Frank Barilich, of South Bend. Their marriage lasted about 35 years, until Frank's death in 1982. Mary lived out her remaining years in happiness among her children, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
