VINTON: Florence D. McGowan. 92 died Monday, February 22, 2010 at the Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab Center in Vinton following an extended illness.
Graveside Services will be held at 1 PM, Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Maplewood Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at Phillips Family Center, 605 2nd Ave, in Vinton from 11 AM to 12:45 PM on Thursday. A Memorial Fund has been established.
Florence was born October 8, 1917 at Vinton to Leon and Ida (Dufresne) Bickal. On February 16, 1951 she was united in marriage to R.T. "Irish" McGowan at Vinton. Irish preceded her in death in 1994. Florence worked at Ward's Bakery and the Benton County Jail for many years. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and she especially enjoyed caring for her pets.
Florence is survived by her children: Keith McGowan, Shirley (Kevin) Schwartz and Janet Moody; and her daughter-in-law Nancy McGowan all of Vinton. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister, Leona Walker of Vinton.
In addition to her parents and husband, Florence was preceded in death by her son Dean in 2009 and two grandchildren in infancy; her brothers, Harold and Albert Bickal; and two sisters, Elsie Engledow and Helen Goodell.
