Bernardo R. Arellano, 84, a longtime resident of Annapolis, died January 18 at Anne Arundel Medical Center due to a lengthy illness and complications from a stroke.
He was born Dec. 4, 1926, in Olongapo, Philippines. A retired World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and retired with the rank of First Class Petty Officer. He served aboard the USS Sierra as a cook and also served as the personal chef to his commanding officer, Admiral Robert L. Dennison.
After his military service, he was hired as a chef for Busch's Chesapeake Inn, a popular seafood restaurant on Route 50 in Annapolis, and was quickly promoted to Executive Chef, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. He was recognized by the State of Maryland for his culinary skills. A devoted fan of the Baltimore Orioles, he enjoyed bowling, gardening and cooking, and was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marlyn Connor Arellano of Baltimore; three sons, Lawrence of Annapolis, Michael (Kimberly) of Houston, Texas and Robert (Tammy) of Edgewater; five granddaughters, Rebecca, Sarah, Maria, Bridget and Elena; three sisters; and two brothers.
A wake service will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 21 at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, Inc., 147 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 22 at St. John Neumann Roman Catholic Church, 620 North Bestgate Road, Annapolis. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to National Parkinson Foundation.
