Graduated in the 1840 class of the U.S. Military Acadamy.

Served in the Mexican, Northwest Indian Wars and the Civil War.

Founded Fort Coville, Washington in 1859. The city of Pikney City, Washington was named after him (later renamed Coleville City).

Lugenbeel County, Dakota Territory was also named for him (later renamed Bennett County, North Dakota).

Retired in 1882 as a full Colonel.
