Roland Hill Hartley (1864-1952) - Find a Grave Memorial

Washington Governor. He moved with parents to Minnesota, in 1878 and later relocated to Page North Dakota, developed farm land and went on the graduate from the Minneapolis Academy, Minnesota. There he became active in Republican politics, was private secretary to Minnesota Governor David Clough and became an American Citizen in 1888. During Sioux uprising, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Minnesota National Guard and moved to Washington State, in 1902. Engaging in the timber business, he helped in the establishment of the Clark-Nickerson Saw mill, was Mayor of Everett, (1910-12) and served in the Washington State Legislature, (1915-17). During World War I, he served as a Captain in Company D, 3rd Infantry, Washington State National Guard. In 1925, he was elected as a Republican the 10th Governor of Washington, serving until 1933. During his governorship, the creation of centralized state highway department was made and new state timber laws were passed. After his term, he resumed his lumber and timber interests until his death at age 88.
