U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1815 and commenced to practice law in Canaan, Vermont. Returning to his home state in 1819, he continued to practice law and was attorney for Middlesex County, Connecticut, (1827-35, 43-44). He also was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1828, 34, 51-52) and judge of probate, (1829-33). In 1835, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and reelected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth Congress, serving until 1839. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he served as a member of the Connecticut State Senate, (1843-50), as judge of the Middlesex County Court, (1849-53) and as U.S. commissioner of customs, (1857-61). Retiring from politics, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
