Galena, Kansas: Margaret R. Aitken, 88, of Galena, Kansas passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Galena Nursing Center following a short illness.

Margaret was born April 1, 1922 to Marion W Kirk and Kathryn Isenberg Kirk in Fredonia, Kansas.

Margaret grew up in Mound Valley, Kansas where she graduated from high school.

After graduating from Parsons Community College she taught grades 1 through 8 in a one-room school house near Mound Valley.

Margaret and Elmer Lee Aitken of Cherryvale, Ks were married at Ft Hood, Texas in 1942.

Margaret was a member of the DAR, Galena Library Board, and Galena Christian Church.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Elmer, her parents, and her siblings; Doris Kirk, David Kirk, and Marianna Lee.

Survivors include her daughter, Kathryn Watkins of Joplin, Missouri and grandson Kent Wheeler of Holton, Kansas as well as nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, January 15th at the Galena Christian Church Educational Building.

Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, KS.

Memorial contributions can be made in lieu of flowers to the Galena Public Library.

David I. Kirk

PARSONS - David I. Kirk, 79, of Parsons, died at 10:55 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at his home.

He had been in failing health.

He was born June 17, 1924, at Fredonia, to Marion W. and Kathryn F. (Isenburg) Kirk.

He grew up and attended schools at Mound Valley. He graduated from Mound Valley High School in 1942.

Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer during World War II in the European Theater. He also participated in the invasion at Normandy, France, the day after D-Day.

He married Thelma M. Hinds on July 5, 1953, at Mound Valley. She preceded him in death on June 20, 1994.

Mr. Kirk worked at Bradbury's Garage at Mound Valley. He also worked at Continental Can at Coffeyville for a few years, then became a self-employed electrician while living in Mound Valley.

He and his family moved to Parsons in 1963, where he was an electrician at Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. He retired in 1989.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church at Parsons.

He was a former member of Altamont Lodge No. 69 and was past master of the Mound Valley Lodge.

Survivors include one son, Kerry Kirk of Parsons; one daughter, Sara Cares of Parsons; one sister, Margaret Aitken of Galena; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Brown on Nov. 9, 1995; two sisters, Marianna Lee in 1990 and his twin sister, Doris Kirk in 1991; and an infant brother, Charles Kirk.

Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peggy Hillmon officiating.

Burial will be in Mound Valley Cemetery.

Military honors will be provided by the Brown-Bishop Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 704.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
