Former area doctor, Volney Douglas, dies
Carleton; Dr. Volney D. Douglas, 82, died Thursday in Omaha. He was a longtime Carleton physician and was prominent as a Union Pacific Railroad surgeon. In medical practice since 1907, he had practiced at Carleton since 1938. Before moving to Carleton, Dr. Douglas had practiced at Tecumseh, Crab Orchard and Bruning.
Dr. Douglas was born in Illinois and had lived in Nebraska 77 years. A graduate of Cotner Medical College, Lincoln, he was a physician and surgeon. He had served as railway surgeon for the ABC Division of the Union Pacific Railroad and as a staff member of the Thayer County Memorial hospital, Hebron, and of the Beatrice Lutheran Hospital. He was a member of the state and national American Medical Associations, the Western Association of Railway Surgeons and the Methodist Church, Carleton.
He is survived by his wife, Mae; a daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Lamb, Fullerton, Calif.; two brothers, Jesse B. Douglas, Morrill, and Dr. John W. Douglas, Joplin, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Adelaide Aaron, Scottsbluff, Mrs. Esther Rothi, Wilmington, Calif., and Miss Miriam Douglas, El Centro, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church, Beatrice, with the Rev. Glenn Marshall of Pearl Memorial Church, Omaha, officiating assisted by the Rev. Lloyd Mohnkern, Carleton. Burial will be at Tecumseh Cemetery.
