Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he helped organize the 1st New York Infantry Regiment and was appointed Colonel in May 1861. Attached to 3rd Corps, Army of the Potomac, he led the 1st New York in actions at the Seven Days' Battles, Manassas and Battle of Fredericksburg. After the engagement at Chancellorsville, Colonel Pierson with the 1st New York Infantry Regiment was honorably discharged and mustered out May 25, 1863. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers.
