MRS. ELIZABETH FOX, WIDELY KNOW PIONEER WOMAN, DIES

Rohnerville, March 18 - Mrs. Elizabeth Shields Fox, one of Humboldt's best known and most loved pioneer women, died this morning at 7 O'clock at her home in this town .

She was 74 years of age and for 35 years had been known and respected by hundreds of loyal Southern Humboldt friends.

Elizabeth F. Shields was born at Glenn, Banegal County, Ireland January 27, 1838. She came to America in 1847, her mother dying in quarantine at Quebec, and she was then adopted by Mrs. Payson who raised her. In 1854 she was married to Benjamin Frost, who died in 1858, leaving besides his widow two children. B. A. Frost and G. A. Frost. She was married to John H. Fox in 1862 and four children blessed the union, Sarah E., Maggie, Eva, and John.

The Fox family arrived in Humboldt in 1877, spending a few years on Eel River Island, at Mountain View Ranch and at Grissly Bluff. The family then moved to Rohnerville where the deceased lady lived for nearly a quarter of a century on the Thomas Kelly place.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Fox is survived by four children, Ben A. Frost of Arcata, George Frost of San Jose, Mrs. William Wible of Falk (near Eureka) and Mrs. Charles Ballard of Eureka. Eighteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive her.

The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 10 O'clock from the family home in Rohnerville.

The Rev. Father E. A. Wible of Eureka will conduct the service. Interment will be in Ferndale Cemetery.
