ROCKLAND – Donald Evans Payson, Sr., 81, went to be with the Lord while surrounded by his family, Thursday, March 30, 2006 at Knox Center For Long Term Care. Born in Rockland, June 15, 1924, he was the son of Olin A. and Ruth Manninen Payson. Educated in local schools, he later attended Boston Trade School.

December 15, 1942, with his brother Kenneth, he enlisted in the United States Navy. During that same time, their mother also served in the Army. Having completed a four-year enlistment, upon discharge from active duty May 5th, 1946, he re-enlisted in the SeaBees. Ultimately he served 20 years with the Naval Reserve.

November 19, 1948, he married Lucille R. Melvin Esancy in Rockland.

An entrepreneur by nature, at one time he owned apartments, a taxi business, service station and trucking business. He was founder of Don Payson Contract Trucking and held exclusive rights for hauling granite in the State of Maine. He later transported lime to Aroostook County, returning with goods and products from that region. For more than 20 years he drove truck for Martin - Marietta's, Thomaston Cement Plant and at the time of his retirement in 1982 logging over two million miles with that company as Top Seniority Driver.

That same year he moved with his wife to Clearwater, Florida where they had wintered more than 17 years. While living there, he worked with Sharlon Trucking Company. In the late 1980s, with his wife he returned to Rockland where they have since resided.
