Richard Winthrop Flores, Sr., 83, of Plainwell, MI, formerly of Holland Township, NJ, died peacefully on December 26, 2010, at the Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, MI, with his beloved wife of nearly 61 years by his side. Born: November 1, 1927, in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Carl and Miriam Dick Flores. Personal: Mr. Flores graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1945 and Lehigh University in 1950 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He held many executive positions at Riegel Paper Corporation for 27 years. He then was the mill manager at Plainwell Paper Company in Plainwell, MI, for several years, and retired from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, where he was the director of the Paper Technology Foundation. He and his wife enjoyed traveling. Dick was an avid sports fan, who also enjoyed stamp and coin collecting. Memberships: He was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was an Eagle Scout and was the Scoutmaster of Troop 51 in Milford for many years. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his distinguished service to the Boy Scouts of America. He served in the US Navy Air Corps during World War II. Dick was a member of many organizations, where he held numerous offices. Some of them included the Milford Lions Club, PIMA, and TAPPI. He was a volunteer at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo and also did fund-raising for WMU's athletic department. He was a former member of the Holland Presbyterian Church, Holland Township, and attended the Gull Lake Area Community Church, Richland, MI. He held positions in both churches. Survivors: His loving family including his wife, the former Mary Jane Williams; two daughters and their husbands, Joanne Iskra-King and her husband, Francis, Spring Hill, FL; Nancy Hill-Moser and her husband, Robert, Easton; one son, Richard Jr., FL; five grandsons, Kurt, Douglas, and Kevin Iskra, and Travis and Trever Hill; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Fallon, RI; five nieces and two nephews; and his two 'adopted' sons and their families, Harry Bird, Portage, MI, and Walter Bird, Darien, IL. Services: Due to the uncertain weather conditions in Michigan, the memorial service will be in the future. Burial will be private. Richard W. Flores Sr., a former Western Michigan University administrator and faculty member, died Dec. 26, 2010. He was 83.

Flores, of Plainwell, Mich., served as executive director of WMU's Paper Technology Foundation from 1989 until his retirement in 1993 with emeritus status. He joined the University in 1983 as a technical associate for the WMU Paper Pilot Plant and also taught courses what was then the Department of Paper and Printing Science and Engineering.

In 2007, Flores and his wife Mary Jane established a permanent endowment fund to support scholarships for WMU students enrolled in paper science and engineering programs.

Flores earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Lehigh University in 1950. Before coming to WMU, he held many executive positions with the Riegel Paper Corp. during 27 years with the firm and was mill manager for the Plainwell Paper Co. for several years. He served as national president of the Paper Industry Management Association from 1979 to 1980.

The U.S. Navy Air Corps veteran did fundraising for WMU's athletic department and was a volunteer at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30. Members of the WMU community are invited to make remarks during the gathering, which will be held in the Gull Lake Area Community Church, 9292 E. CD Ave., Richland, Mich.

Memorial contributions may be made to WMU's Gary Fund or Flores Endowed Scholarship, both through the Development Office, or to the Kalamazoo Air Zoo.
