Wounded on July 9, 1970 when a fellow trooper stepped on a mine; he died two months later at a hospital in Japan from his injuries. Edward's parents died when he was young and he was raised by his aunt and uncle.

Specialist Edward Polk McCarthy died in a hospital in Tokyo , Japan after he was wounded in combat in Vietnam since December 1969.

A member of Baldwyn First Baptist Church, he attended Baldwyn High School, Marion Institute in Marion, AL; the University of Richmond (VA) and the University of Tennessee at Martin.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Brenda Ferguson McCarthy of Pontotoc; his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Vandiver of Baldwyn, and two sisters, Miss Golden Vandiver and Mrs. Bill Sworrds of Huntsville, AL.

For a while he lived at his aunt, Miss Margaret Polk of 35 Patricia Drive. He was the nephew of James A. "Babe" McCarthy, coach of the Memphis Pros professional basketball team.

He was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. C.E. McCarthy and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. E.P. McCarthy of Baldwyn and the late Mr. and Mrs. Oscar B. Polk of Memphis.
