Seneca McNeill Bane was born in NY and was married there 4 Dec 1850 to Jane Agnes Leigh. Seneca and Jane had 3 children. Jane died in childbirth in 1856.

At the breaking out of the Civil War Seneca enlisted as a Private in Salem, New York, at the age of 27, on 1 Oct 1861. He mustered into Co A 7th New York Cavalry on 28 Oct 1861 and was discharged 31 Mar 1862 at Washington D.C. Seneca's Civil War records were found under the name of McBain and McBrain.

After his discharge he and his two daughters lived in Nashville, then several years in Jennings County, Indiana. In 1872 he settled on a farm northeast of Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa. He eventually moved to the town of Villisca. One of Seneca's daughters married U.F. Freezer and died in 1901. First name unknown. Seneca lived with his daughter Sarah and husband Levi Query for many years. In 1915 he went to the Soldiers Home at Marshalltown, Iowa.

Seneca died at the age of 88 years at the hospital at Marshalltown after a year of failing health.

Note: Seneca's last name has been spelled many ways, possibly due to his middle name of McNeill. Various spellings include McBain, McBrain, McBane, Bane, and Bain. Seneca requested the name of his wife, Jane Agnes Leigh Bane and son Theodore James Bane, be recorded on his headstone. Jane died during childbirth and Theodore at age one month in New York in 1856.
