Composer. Edwin Excell received recognition for writing Christian hymns. He wrote the lyrics and musical score for the hymns "Count Your Blessings" and "Since I Have Been Redeemed." He was known as E. O. Excell. Gaining popularity, he was mentioned in Sinclair Lewis' novel "Elmer Gantry." He complied nearly 90 Christian and secular song books and was given credit for 2,000 songs. Between 1877 and 1883, he studied music formally at the Normal Musical Institutes of George F. Root where he also received vocal training. After being in the hospital for six months following an acute illness, he died. He was buried in the family's plot.
