This illustration shows Florence Crawford Capper, (1868-1926). The daughter of Kansas' third governor, Samuel Johnson Crawford, and his wife Isabel Chase Crawford. Florence was, born on July 1, 1868, and was the first daughter to be born to a Kansas governor while in office. In 1870, her father, a member of the Florence Town Company, named the town of Florence, in Marion County, in her honor. On December 1, 1892, Florence became the wife of Kansas' twentieth governor, Arthur Capper. When her husband was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1918, Florence moved to Washington D.C. where she lived until her death on May 10, 1926.
