In 1850 MacDonald attended school in District 9, Greenup County, Kentucky, where he lived with his parents, brother Francis, sister Elizabeth, and his grandmother, Elizabeth Abrams. In 1860, MacDonald was living in Bloom, Scioto County, Ohio, where he worked at a blast furnace (probably nearby Franklin Furnace). He still lived at home with his parents, who by that time had two more children, Basel and Mary J Crawford.
In the 1870 census, MacDonald had married Rachel. They had three children - McDonald 1864, Cena 1866, and Emma J, 1868. MacDonald and his family lived in Jefferson, Jackson County, Ohio. He still worked at the blast furnace. In the 1880 census, MacDonald was living in Jefferson, Jackson County, Ohio. He was working as a charcoal maker and he and his wife had four more children; Delilah May 1872, Elizabeth 1874, Benjamin Franklin 1876, and Francis M. 1880. MacDonald's mother-in-law, Livina Radabaugh was also living with his family in 1880.
In the 1910 census, MacDonald Crawford was living with his son Benjamin Franklin in Third Creek, Gasconade County, Missouri. He was retired. In 1913, his grandson Earl visited him at the home of Ben Franklin. While there, Earl wrote a letter to his sister in Saint Louis, saying, "..write to Grandpa as he is getting very old and you may not a get a chance to write much longer as he is in a terrible shape. He hasn't been away from the house for more than 4 months."
MacDonald Crawford passed away on June 2, 1915 of heart disease. He is interred at New Bethel Cemetery in Bay, Gasconade County, Missouri. MacDonald's death certificate says that his son Benjamin Crawford was the undertaker for his funeral.
