Former Resident Here Is Killed In Korean Action
A 24-year-old former Springfieldian, who had been in the Army only nine months, has been killed in action in Korea. Pfc. Shirley D. Hale, son of Mrs. Myrtle Hale, 755 South avenue, was killed on October 24, according to a telegram received by his wife Mrs. Mary Hale of Sedalia. Young Hale, a member of the 7th Infantry division, had been in Korea five months, his wife said. A graduate of Senior High school with the class of 1946. Hale formerly was employed by Producers Creamery here. He and Mrs. Hale moved to Sedalia about two years ago. Besides his wife and mother he is survived by a brother, Lawrence Hale, who is stationed at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J.; and two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Nell of 1228 East Belmont and Darlene Sue Hale of 755 South Avenue. The 7th Infantry Division was involved in the Battle of Triangle Hill, also known as Operation Showdown (Oct. 14 - Nov. 25, 1952) at the time of Pfc. Shirley D. Hale's death. Triangle Hill was located north of Kimhwa near the Korean Demilitarized Zone.
