Pauline was born in Sedalia, Indiana and had an older sister, Mabel. Her parents were Charles and Pearl Carter Hefner. She married Paul Victor Steele November 4, 1933 in Indiana.

She and Paul had one adopted daughter, Janet Anne, and three grandchildren, Theadora Esther (Teddi) Kella Fuller, Pauline Virginia (Reeni) Kella Hyatt and Trenton Andrew Personette.

She attended the church where the cemetery is located for many years, which at that time was South Wayne Mennonite Church. Her husband, Paul was raised in the Church of the Brethren, formally the German Baptist Church. She and her husband cared for many foster children over the years.
