African-American teacher and abolitionist. On December 10, 1805, she married James Forten, becoming his second wife. With her husband and their daughters, she was an active member in the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society. Their children were Margaretta Forten (suffragist, 1806-1875), Harriet Forten Purvis (abolitionist and suffragist, 1810-1875), Robert Bridges Forten (abolitionist, 1813-1864), Sarah Louisa Forten Purvis (abolitionist, 1814-1884), James Forten, Jr. (abolitionist), William Deas Forten (abolitionist, 1823-1909), Charlotte Forten, Mary Theresa Forten, Thomas Willing Francis Forten (1827-1897).
