For sixteen seasons (1962 to 1977), he played at the outfielder and catcher positions with the Los Angeles/California Angels, Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers. Born Edgar Leon Kirkpatrick, he was raised in Glendora, California, where he attended high school. He was signed as an amateur free agent by the Angels in 1962, and broke into the Major Leagues with them less than one month shy of his 18th birthday on September 13th, 1962; he appeared in 3 games that season. Primarily a utility player throughout his career, Kirkpatrick's most productive season was in 1973 with the Royals, when he recorded 113 hits in 126 games. He saw postseason action with the Pirates during the 1974 and 1975 National League Championship Series, as he appeared in 5 total games. In 1,311 career regular season games, he amassed 824 hits, with a .238 lifetime batting average. He extended his baseball career an additional season (1978) in the Pacific Coast League before retiring. In 1981, Kirkpatrick was seriously injured in an automobile accident which left him permanently disabled. He died from throat cancer.
