US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He received the award for US Navy Secretary Charles Edison on January 19, 1940 for his actions as a master diver with the US Navy minesweeper USS Falcon (ASR-2 on May 23m 1939. He joined the US Navy in 1922 and by March 1939 he was certified as a master diver. During World War II, he was commissioned as a lieutenant, serving in a variety of salvage and diving-related positions. After the war, he transferred to the Fleet Reserve and retired in December 1952. He died at the age of 57. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "For extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as a master diver throughout the rescue and salvage operations following the sinking of the U.S.S. Squalus on 23 May 1939. His leadership and devotion to duty in directing diving operations and in making important and difficult dives under the most hazardous conditions characterize conduct far above and beyond the ordinary call of duty."
