Moses was the oldest son of Lewis Castleman Hawkins and his wife Mary Beard Hawkins. He was descended from Captain Moses Hawkins, who died in the Battle of Germantown, in 1777 during the Revolutionary War. He had two families - one with his first wife Martha, and then with his second wife and her children by her first husband.
