Anthony August passed away at Salinas Valley
Memorial Hospital on Oct. 13th, 2009, at the age of 91 years. Anthony was a native of Lawrence, MA. but was a resident of Graciosa, Azore Islands from the age of 2 years until at 20 years of age he moved to San Juan Bautista, CA At that point, speaking no English, Anthony enlisted in the U. S. Army, served during WWII and learned the English language. Anthony was proud of his military service and was a charter member of the Leslie L. Garrett Post, V.F.W. of San Juan Bautista; was a volunteer fireman in San Juan Bautista; and a parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish. Anthony worked for Ideal Cement Plant in San Juan Bautista as a truck driver and a brick layer for a period of 27 years until the plant was forced to close. In 1970, he movee to Hollister. He then worked for Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for the next 17 years until he retired.
Surviving Anthony, is his wife Alice August of Hollister; his children Anthony Jr. of Arizona, Timothy A. August of San Jose, Mark August of Hollister, Priscilla Drapela of OR, Laura Banuelos-Acevedo of Hollister, Edd Hedrick of OR, Johnny Hedrick of OK, Nancy De La Pena of Hollister and John Souza of Coarsgold, CA. He was "PaPa" to many grandchildren. He was predeceased by his children Jeffrey August, Linda Pickering, and Gene DeSouza and his spouses Belva August and Madeline August.
Anthony loved the out of doors; gardening, fishing and hunting, and most importantly, playing with his grandchildren---" He had to see his grandchildren every day", said his family. He was an avid 49'er fan; and traveled each year to MA to visit his family. Visitation will be Friday Oct., 16th, 2009, from 2:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at the Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home.(No rosary)
Family and friends will leave the mortuary on Saturday at 9:30 A.M. for a 10:00 A.M. Mass at St. Benedict's Church 1200 Fairview Rd., Hollister. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery with honors provided by the Leslie L. Garrett Post and Hollister Post, V.F.W.
