One of seven children of Marian Gertrude Easterlin and James Alexander Reed. His siblings included: Ernest L., Marcus Fred, James Marion, Raymond Brunson, and Cecil.

He appears with his parents and siblings in the 1900 Federal Census of Willow, Orangeburg, South Carolina, living on a farm they owned. The household, all born in South Carolina to parents from South Carolina, included: J A Reed, age 40, born October 1859, married 18 years, a farmer; Gertia, age 35, born November 1864, married 18 years, six childre; Earnest, age 17, born January 1883; Ulea, age 14, born December 1885; Fred, age 12, born July 1887; Howel, age 9, born September 1890; Marion, age 5, born March 1895; and Ramon, age 3, born April 1897.

Cecil and Ernest are buried in South Carolina in the same cemetery as their father.

Howell married Mary Riddle and had two daughters. He worked as a conductor for Seaboard Air Lines Railroad for 44 years. At the end of his career, he conducted on the Silver Meteor. He died of a heart attack.
