Douglas Doyle Brown, of Longmont, died November 8, 2010 at HospiceCare Center in Louisville after a battle with cancer. He was 68.
He was born August 4, 1942 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to William Doyle and Wilma Juanita (Tinker) Brown.
Doug graduated from Poplar Bluff High School. He attended Arkansas State University from 1960 to 1963. He then served in the U.S. Coast Guard from February 6, 1963 until his honorable discharge on January 20, 1967. He returned to Arkansas State graduating in January 1969 with a BA degree in Political Science and History. He continued with graduate studies in Political Science at Memphis State.
He married Mary Neal Little on February 2, 1969 in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Doug worked as an engineering assistant for Teletype Corp in Little Rock, Arkansas and was a Boy Scout Executive in Alabama. He moved to Longmont in 1972. Following his move, Doug was a New York Life Insurance agent in Longmont before joining the U.S. Postal Service where he was a clerk and then a stationary engineer for 27 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church and had participated in Bible Study Fellowship.
Doug was currently serving on the Boulder County Mental Health Board of Directors; and had previously served on the Longmont Library Board, the Friends of the Longmont Library, which he eventually chaired and the Transportation Advisory Board. He was elected to the Longmont City Council from Ward I for two terms, 1999 to 2006. He represented Longmont at the Colorado Municipal League, the National League of Cities and the Denver Regional Council Of Governments (DRCOG). By one count he has served on more the 50 committees and boards.
Doug was an avid reader and he liked to share what he had learned. On council he was known to read every packet, and he enjoyed discussing issues very thoroughly.
He enjoyed cross-country and downhill skiing, hut to hut trips, hiking, backpacking and talking to people. Doug especially enjoyed bicycling. He often rode his bike to work and was occasionally riding his bike 50 miles around Denver at the time of his diagnosis.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Doug is survived by his wife, Mary Neal Brown of Longmont; his mother, Wilma Brown of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; his brother, Larry Brown of Memphis, Tennessee; and his sister, Becky Steiger Brown of Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00pm Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 at the Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, the family will be present to greet friends. Funeral services will be 10:00am Friday, Nov. 19 at the First United Methodist Church. Interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 1:30pm Staging Area/Shelter B.
