UPDATED This photograph is of the first entrance to the cemetery. There are 4 entrances on the front of the cemetery off of 1st Street, one in the back, off of Cherry Drive, and one main entrance & exit in what is called the "new" section, although this part of the cemetery has been in use since the 1940's, also off of 1st Street. Oakwood Cemetery, also known as Lanett City Cemetery, is an old and historic burial ground, and final resting place of many local celebrities and well-known individuals. Managed by the City of Lanett, it dates back to when the town was just a small cotton manufacturing town on the Chattahoochee River. The earliest marked burial is Horace D. Sheppard, d. 1896. It was thought for a long time that Adolphus L. Morgan, d. 1897, was the first marked burial. I don't know why Horace was overlooked. Before that citizens of Lanett & surrounding Chambers County & West Point, GA were buried in West Point, if not on homesteads or family cemeteries. Beautiful but simple wrought iron gates closed the drives at sundown from 1937 to 1967.
