Audrey E. Cox, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2010, at the age of 93. She was born in Armbrust, Pennsylvania on Nov. 21, 1916, to George and Helen Pool. Audrey was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was proceeded in death by Paul Cox, her husband of 64 years; and is survived by her son David and daughter Kathy Cox; by her beloved niece Margaret VanZant, and by 14 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
When Audrey was still a young girl her family moved to Portland. It was here in Oregon that she learned to love the outdoors, camping & fishing, and especially the Oregon coast. She was an honor student in high school and she went on to earn teaching degrees from both Southern Oregon University and Western Washington University. Audrey & Paul married while Paul was still serving in the army and she put her new teaching degree to good use as she accompanied him from base to base. Even near the end of her life, she loved to tell stories of those times as a new teacher in El Paso, Texas. After the war Audrey & Paul returned to the Northwest, eventually settling in Portland where they raised their family. Audrey was a dedicated teacher with assignments at many Portland elementary schools, most notably at Sabin and Jason Lee. She was proud of her profession and proud of her students, often pointing out that a successful business person or a Portland political figure had been in her class as a grade school student.
Audrey and Paul had a long and enjoyable retirement. They loved to fish the Columbia and to go camping in their RV. They spent many years as "Good Sam" members traveling throughout the West. As driving became more difficult, they loved to take cruises.
Audrey was taught to fish by her father and she was truly one of that 10% of fishermen who catch 90% of the fish. She was very protective of her fishing secret and no one in her family could ever figure out her techniques for fishing success.
Audrey held strong opinions and was very self assured, yet she could often make you laugh and even toward the end of her life she could put a funny spin on an everyday event and bring a smile to your face. She was a fighter, never satisfied with what she considered to be less than the best. She held her head high even as her health deteriorated.
