Born in Lislea, County Derry, the oldest of 11 children of Richard Anderson and Mary Ann Carmichael.

The children were all baptised by clergy from St. Patrick's Church of Ireland in Kilrea (pictured) where their parents were married.

The family immigrated to Grenville County, Ontario, about 1870 where May met and married farmer William McConnell. They settled in Dundas County where they had four children of their own.

After her husband's death in 1901, May ran the household until the death of their son Richard in 1907 from TB and her daughter Mary's death in California - Mary E. McConnell 1879 – 1915.
