Darlis "Jack" Daniel Ball, 88, fourth generation resident of Attica, KS, passed away in Wichita, KS on Friday, June 11, 2010.
Jack was born September 2, 1921 on his family's farm just south of Attica, in a two story wood framed farmhouse that was built by his Great Grandfather. He was the second child and only son born to Curtis Daniel and Geneva June (Wagner) Ball.
He grew up on the back of a horse, wandering through open fields and swimming in creeks. Jack attended a one room country school and graduated from Attica High School, where he excelled in track and set many records.
Jack was inducted into the United States Army, July 16, 1942, during World War II, and served his country as a mortar gunman on the front lines in England and Frances. He was wounded in action near Metz France, November 6, 1944, and granted an honorable discharge on June 12, 1945. Some of Jack's honors included an EAME Ribbon, Bronze Battle Star, Good Conduct Ribbon, M1 Expert Rifleman, and a Purple Heart.
Upon his military discharge, Jack returned home to Attica where he met his wife of sixty-two years, Vada Larie McDaniel. They were married in Sharon, KS on September 12, 1946. The couple had three daughters, Brenda, Julie, and Jodi.
Jack worked as a machinist for Black Industries, John Weitzel Company, and Attica Engineering for over thirty years. In 1964, he resumed his role on the family farm and later purchased the property from his father.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vada; and three sisters: Dorothy Newberry, Mary Headberg, and Bobbie Gerberding.
Jack will be deeply missed by his family: daughters, Brenda (Kenneth) Dixon of rural Zenda, KS, Julie (David) Pope of Topeka, KS, Jodi (John) Mitchell of Goddard, KS; seven grandchildren: Kirk (Christel) Dixon, Kyle Jack (Michelle) Dixon, Katie Figgs, Stacey Pope, Ian Gaug, Alec Gaug, Blake Mitchell; six great grandchildren: Derek, Riley, Cheyene, Ciara, Caden, and Freddy; his sister, Betty Boden of Attica; his caregiver, Lindsey Snyder; and a host of many loving friends & family.
Military honors were presented by the Ft Riley Honor Guard and taps were played by Jeremy Pickens, at the Attica Cemetery
