James Franklin "Jim" Burks is the son of George Robert Burks and Melissa Jane Boyette. He is the grandson of Mastin Milton Burks and Martha Jane Sanders; and the great-grandson of John Brinkley Burks and Temperence Evans.

He was born in Oakland, a farming community seven miles east of Canton in east central Van Zandt County.

He married Annie Clee Nipp on June 5, 1916 in Ben Wheeler, Texas.

Jim and Annie had four children:
George Jefferson
Jodie
Lewis and Lois (twins)

Jim married Charlsie Jane Pierson on December 24, 1932 in Marietta, Oklahoma.

Jim and Charlsie had five children:
James Willard
Luteen Frances
Charles Richard
Melvin Ray
Tommy Dale
