I have posted two pictures of William's will. I have also included a transcription of the will in the caption of the first picture. Larger and clearer images of the will may be seen by clicking on the pictures, and the transcription in the caption may also be read by clicking on the first picture.

William was the son of Robert Dimmitt and Alice Chapman, and he was raised near the city of Knoxville. There were six other children born into the Robert and Alice Dimmitt family: Dianna, married William Elliott; Nancy, married James Jones; Susannah, married Abner Beeson; Thomas, married Rachel Elliot; Sophia, married John Brockus; and Miles, married Sarah Kenworthy.

Sophia Dimmitt Brockus

William and Susannah were married November 12, 1809, in Warren County, Ohio.

In 1824, they moved to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and settled into an area which became known as the High Gap Neighborhood in Union Township. William was mentioned in the Tippecanoe County history books as being one of the earliest settlers of the area, having moved there from Wayne County, Indiana, in "an early day." On May 25, 1825, William received the two 80-acre plots he had claimed as a "setter" from the federal government. The family lived here until they sold their farm on November 6, 1843, before moving to Iowa.

In March 1845, William and Susannah left Indiana and brought their family to Iowa. William died on May 28, 1855, only ten years after making the trip to Iowa. Susannah survived him by only two years, dying on June 28, 1857.

In addition to the children who are linked to their memorials, William & Susannah had another daughter: Their 4th child, Elizabeth aka Betsy, was born on Feb. 2, 1816, in Wayne CO., IN. She married Nehemiah D. Earl on March 17, 1839, in Tippecanoe CO. Nehemiah and Elizabeth came to Wapello CO. IA. when the Dimmitt family moved here; however, they sold out and moved to Decatur CO. in 1876. On June 2, 1879, they sold their land in Decatur County.

I have seen information on the internet, saying that Nehemiah died on July 5, 1890, and Elizabeth died on July 7, 1890, but there are no further details provided, and no sources about where this information came from. Elizabeth is shown in the June 1890 Census for Oklahoma City, living with her son William D., his wife Marah H., and their son Clarence. Nehemiah is not in that census record, so he must have already passed. If anyone knows anything further or finds any more information about the fate of Nehemiah and Elizabeth, please let me know.

Until such time that Nehemiah and Elizabeth are hopefully found, I am including here links to the findagrave memorials for their children:

Nehemiah and Elizabeth had another daughter whose grave we have not found yet: Loduska, who married Alexander Wright in Wapello County on February 23, 1871. Loduska and her husband had two children: Effie, born in 1873, and Guy, born in 1876. (In the 1880 Census for Bloomington, Iowa, Guy and Effie were living with their grandparents Nehemiah and Elizabeth Earl.) On September 30, 1880, Loduska (Earl) Wright married George A. Greene in Ottumwa, Iowa. (Name is spelled Luduska in the marriage record in ancestry.com.)

In the summer of 1997, my husband and I began doing restoration on the Dimmitt family plot in Round Point. We had taken a class in gravestone repair at Indian Hills Community College that spring. The Dimmitt family plot had been completely engulfed in weeds and brush, including poison ivy, wild grape vines, a thorn bush, and tree saplings so thick they had pushed over all but two stones, William's and his granddaughter Clydena's. Susannah's stone was broken in half. We cut down and carried off three pick-up loads of brush and saplings from this gravesite. On a later date, Neil Kibler and Robert Dimmitt assisted us in digging out and burning the stumps and roots of the larger bushes and saplings. One cluster of roots was so thick that Neil had to bring a tractor in and pull it out with a log chain.

We enjoyed restoring the Dimmitt gravesite, and we asked for and received permission from the cemetery trustees to work on any gravestones we wanted to work on in Round Point. Over the next seven years, we worked our way completely through the old part of the cemetery and cleaned, repaired, and reset any gravestones that needed work. We also purchased several small gravestones for people that had never had stones.

Since then, we have returned to the cemetery whenever repairs are needed and tried to keep everything looking as nice as possible. I have worked on a pictorial documentation of the old part of the cemetery, including details about the work we did on each gravestone and also including pictures of stones that did not need repair. As of 2023, I am working on completing it and printing it. If anyone would like more pictures and information on the restoration of the Dimmitt burial area or any of the other gravestones we worked on in Round Point, please let me know, and I will be happy to send information to you.
