John Powell Elliff Age 55 went to meet his Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning March 2, 2005 at his home. He was called peacefully by his heavenly father after a courageous battle with melanoma. John is survived by wife Debbie, son Aaron and daughter-in-law Sandy Flores, sons Corey and Brian. His mother Audre and step father Denny Wehrman, father George, brother Greg, sisters Nancy Fetters and Sasha Fochtman and several nieces and nephews.
John grew up in East San Jose off Mt. Hamilton Road in a house that his father and grandfather built. John has always remembered his good friends and their families that lived on or near Kenny Lane.
John graduated from James Lick H.S. in 1968. He graduated from Modesto J.C. then attended Cal Poly. At age 20 John began working with the California Division of Forestry in Santa Clara Unit which led to a life long career in fire fighting. In 1986 John was appointed Battalion Chief. He moved his family to east Contra Costa County to be close to the Sunshine Fire Station where he worked. He retired in May of 2003. He served approximately 33 years with CDF. Everyone that knew John knew him as a man of integrity and respected him. He was a founding member of the Diablo Fire Safe Council.
Two weeks before his passing he made one last trip with his brother Greg to the Sunshine fire station. John's life long commitment to firefighting and to his brothers at CDF never wavered.
John was a devoted loving husband and father. He enjoyed flying privately with friends and professionally for CDF. John loved to snow ski many of his happiest memories were with his family at their cabin in Pinecrest, CA. John had a passion for traveling and visiting beloved National Parks.
John will be remembered for his acts of bravery, kindness and strong will. He spent his last days consoling others and making us laugh.
Those who spent time with John, in the last few months were blessed to witness the amazing grace of God's preparation for John's journey. God must have needed another hero and called John to the front of the line.
