DIED AT THE HOME NEAR PLEASANT
VALLEY YESTERDAY
MORNING AT 5:30 O'CLOCK

HE SERVED AS SUPERVISION

Prominent Republican Leader - Stood
High in Council of His Party.
Was at One Timer Superintendent
of Alms House.

DeWit [sic] Newton Washington a prominent and prosperous farmer of Ashby District living at Pleasant Valley, died yesterday morning at 5:30 o'clock as the result of a third stroke of paralysis sustained several weeks ago. He was born September 12, 1852, therefore he was 65 years, 6 months and 20 days old.

Though born in Augusta county, his parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Washington moved to Rockingham County, where Mr. Washington has lived since the age of ten. For many years he was a member of the Methodist Church, but in late years he joined the Reformed Church and was an elder in that church up until the time of his death.

Mr. Washington was a prominent Republican and stood high in the councils of his party. On May 4, 1880, he was elected a member of the Board of Supervisors from Ashby District and continued a member with the exception of two four year terms, until several years ago. For eight years or two terms, he was superintendent of the County Alms house.

The fact that the deceased was a member of the Board of supervisors for a number of years is sufficient evidence that he was held in high esteem by every citizen in Ashby District and his constructive and progressive work on this board caused him to be admired by the entire citizenship of Rockingham County. He possessed a cheerful and jovial disposition which brought him nearer to his many friends.

As a member of the board, his vote more than once made his fellow citizens glad, and advanced the cause of good roads and good schools. Many of the institutions within the county's borders, stand as monuments to the thoughtfulness and far sightedness of DeWit Newton Washington.

Mr. Washington is survived by his wife, who before marriage was Miss Addie C. Rhinehart and three children, Mrs. T. T. Dodd; Mrs. G. G. Bowman, of near Harrisonburg; and W. Warren Washington of Crozet. He also leaves one brother, H. H. Washington, of Washington, D. C. and two sisters Mrs. Fannie Craun, Ryan, Virginia and Mrs. Alee Horring, Lynchburg.

The funeral services will be held from Spaders Church Wednesday morning at 11:30 conducted by Rev. Lloyd Anderson, pastor of the Reformed Church. The Masonic Order will have charge of the services and the pall bearers will be selected from that order.
