Chemokamun, 1769-1863: Almost the entire city attended the funeral and burial at Elmwood of Detroit businessman and landowner Joseph Campau. Called Chemokamun -- literally "Big Shot" -- by the Indians, Campau made part of his fortune by sometimes loaning money at up to 500 percent interest, making modern-day loansharks look cheap by comparison. He once had Father Gabriel Richard thrown into jail for a debt. By 1894 his family holdings were were $10 million.
